1) I defenitly would have handled the situation similiar as the Teacher in the scenario. Before every Exam I would move tables apart and leave a big space between every student. Cheating by talking or looking over someones shoulder are prevented. Because of the increased use of technologies and the danger of potential cheating through those I would have a basket on my desk and make every student put any electronic device they have with them in it. After the exam everybody is welcome to take cell phones, iPods etc. back. If there are students who will protest and will not give their electronic device away I would pay extra close attention to their movement and behavior. Also, students who tend to hide in the background are more likleyto cheat, they are hiding something. In my opinion it is a good method to let everybody sit down and then say: "Everybody in the back comes and sits in the 1st and 2nd row and people who sit in the front can sit in the back and middle of the room." I know that a lot of my peers in High School got "screwed over" (excuse my language) that way!!!
2) I would not ban all cell phones. Pretty much everybody owns a cell phone and carries one with them 24 hours a day. Certainly that would be the case in your classroom and if you would ban cellphones, where should students put their cell phone during that time? I think the rule would get broken any day. Therefore, I would just make sure that certain rules are followed. For example, have you phone on "quiet mode", have it in your backpack, don't text during class. If students will not obey these rules and I would see someone text during class I would take the phone for the day and give it to the principle. The students can get it the next day with a note to the parents.
3) I think that Laura and Jessica deserve a 0. But everybody does those mistakes. I was not an angel in High School! So I believe that warning them and giving them a bad grade is punishment enough. If they are motivated and engaged students this was their first and last time cheating. For the next couple exams I would pay close attention to them and if nothing seems superstitious I let them off the hook!
4) Cell phones should not be prohibited in school. Too much protest and arguments would occur. Most parents want their child to be able to call them if there is an emergency. Strong rules in each classroom must exist and followed. Also, the school boared should provide information on cell phone policies to the parents. If someone does not follow the rules no one can complain due to proper information that the school provided on this matter. If there are incidents after incidents I would recomend to have policies about electronic devices written out on a piece of paper and have parents sign them. The policy could for example be: Every electronic device must be handed in to the teacher before class and can get collected back after class. No ones personal things will be taken out of their sight and robbery accuses or inappropriate use/handeling of the device are avoided (accuse of the teacher).

Week 6 Case Study Digital Storytelling (Focus Quetions)
1) By creating digital stories Students are able to get in touch with some of the modern technologies used on a almost daily basis by buisness persons, teachers or just a individual at home.
With Google Docs or Wikis the teacher can enable them to brainstorm together and bounce of ideas of one another. With Power Point or iMovie or any other program they can develop their digital stroies. Students become more advanced in their typing skills, creativity skills, communication, grammar, critical thinking skills and many other skills. They know how to present 'something' or themselves and know for example how to make a personal Portfolio for an interview (scenario). Or how to create a PowerPoint Slideshow for a Meeting in their later jobs. I believe that knowing how to use certain programs on the computer, how to be creative and to be able to tell a interesting, engaging story (about themselves or something else) through those medias; students competence and self-esteem level increases/can be increased.
2) As a teacher we must make sure that every student in the classroom is on the same page. Everybody should know what to do, where to do it and how to do it!! It is important to warn your students about potential danger like inappropriate popups or non-relaiable websources. With this; comes to show where to find quantative information and how to avoid unexpected material/Websites to show up on your screen. You need to let them know what your expectations are. What your rules are. That plagarism for example is unexeptable and instead promote independent research and thought development or critisicm. If data is taken form a website show them how to appropriatly source it make a correct reference.
3) Shy students get the chance to show their work with for example a vidoe in their story without actually speaking out loud in front of a classroom. Through images, music and videos they can show their talent and hard work they put into the digital story. If students are inscecure about their work the digital stories can be presented to the class without telling who created it, anonymys. If they get positive feedback their self-esteem may raise up and they will more likely to be more out going in the future.

Case Study 4 Digital Storytelling Melissa Urbanski
1) In my opinion Glenna is more likely to succeed in writing a good scholarship essay. Through Mr. Smith Glenna actually enjoyed her writing class and was able to explore different styles for expressing her feelings. Instead of always having to handwrite long papers Mr. Smith improved students motivation by introducing new technology to the class. He showed Students via the storyboard how to organize material and enhanced students creativity with the help of Window Moviemaker and them creating their own stories. He gave students a way to connect on a different level with the material as well as prepared them for their later careers by introducing technology to the classroom. Glenna was actually excited to write her essay after taking Mr. Smiths class and will therefore present a better work in my opinion.
2) As a teacher you must always be aware of the potential of your students. Some may be experts if it comes down to modern technology and others (like myself) may try to avoid the contact with it as much as possible. Know who needs extra help and attention. Create groups for example so peers can help each other out. When using for example a computer lab and showing students a new technology like Window Moviemaker always make sure that you will guide them step by step through the process the very first time. This way everybody should be on the same page and knows what and how to do their tasks. Later on the teacher can help individuals out. If it is a big amount of studentsj in the class I would ask for help from an assistent teacher or someone who knows the technology.
3) Laura did not realize that she was watching "a story" on her iPod. It just wasn't written out but rather acted out (digital storytelling). There are many different ways of telling a story. Telling it, writing it, drawing it, acting it out etc. By watching a television show on her iPod laura, without knowing, might improved her communication skills. I for example watched many many TV shows with english subtitles in order to improve my english. By reading and hearing the words my english got so much better then just by simply reading a book.
4) One of the most common ways digital stories are shared is probably through email. Everyday you type an email either to your professors or boss (professional) or friends. Other then I can think of: Twitter, Blogs, Wikis, Videos, Slideshows, Albums, Podcasts etc. We use so many of them on a daily basis without really recognizing it to communicate with others, to tell them stories about our days, lifes, plans, careers and go on.
5) By infusing technology and writing Mr. Smith brought a differnt way of learning into the classroom. He made learning more fun! When students posted their work on YouTube and read, comment and critique classmates he improved their reading, writing and critical thinking skills. They discoverd writing on a new level. Instead of just writing something down on paper they could actually evaluate peers work and like said in the case study learned more about their peers. They were included in the process of figuring out what was done good and was done badly. Like Glenna said: "I understand it - its meaning, its purpose, the author's voice.." She actually "felt" what was written and not just read it. Glenna found a new perspective to look at literauture and can emphazise with the story that is told and therefore in engaged and motivated in the process of reading it.
6) Laura would have learned to look at litetature from a different perspective. Through technology she might would have discoverd the meaning behind stories and enjoyed reading them more. She may have learned like Glenna that she can express her thoughts and share them with other in many differnts ways and levels.
pg.7) I really like the idea of creating digital Stories on for example Windows Moviemaker because students improve so many skills (crativity, writing, reading, technology etc). They are activley involved in the process of creating their stories see litetarue form a different angle (like Glenna does now).

Case Study 3 "Wikis" Melissa Urbanski
Case Study Week 3 "Wikis" Melissa Urbanski
1) I believe that Miss Walker was right to review proper summarizing and parahrasing. Although, you could expect from a High School Student to know how to do this correct. Students in my opinion liked the project but were lazy and pretty much copied and paste text from the web. Therefore, I think it is very important as a teacher to warn students about plagarism and threaten them with an F. No one learns something if the information is stolen and most of the times not even read through (copied an entire paragraph for example). A good way to avoid plagarism is simpliy to tell students that they will have to present what they have written out. Consequently, everybody must read what they turn in and know exactly what content their work contains. If not, plagarism probably occured.
2) In my opinion wikis should not be used any earlier then in Middle School. It is important for students to learn proper handwriting before learning and improving typing skills. In middle school most of the students already know how to use the computer and access a webpage. By creating a secure website that the teacher will let the students have access to iformation can get exchanged, homework assignemnts posted and discussions lead. Students will have a appropriate age to enhance typing and computer skills which will be helpful and needed in their life ater school.
3) To make sure that every students is involved in the writing process I as a teacher would tell my kids that everybody had to add at least one paragraph about the research they have done. Under that paragraph they will have to add their name.
4) This depends on the individual I think. But in most cases I would give students a 0. They most certainly knew what they were doing. If only one or two sentences were copied it is no big deal. But if entire paragraphs and summarise were copied students were simply to lazy to do the work by themselves.
5) Students must be informed that wikis are created an modified by many different people. Not everyone of those people are educated, reliable sources. I think it is important to show students the differnces between for example "com" or "org" sites. Let them know where good information is available and on which websites they must evaluate and use their critical thinking skills.
pg.7 I would like to learn more about wikis and if they actually can improve students writing skills. I just do not see the difference between a handwritten article versus a typed article that is posted on the web. The case study says that students think more carefully about what they will write due to access to their work from peers. I disagree because I believe that a good student who is engaged and motivated to get good grades is just as encouraged to present a good handwritten report to the teacher then a printed repot on a wiki website.

Case Study Week 2 melissa urbanski
Case Study Biology and Digital Storytelling
The after school intern provided adequate background information. He/She said where the case study were hold (Skyview High School, Billings), during which subject (Anatomy Class) students will do the activity and for which age group the activity is appropriate (juniors/seniors). The technology used is a Vidoe created by students which will then be shown through the media IMovie.
Also, he/she gave reasons why this case study could enhance students learning. First, they will have to do a selective research since the video will be informative (informative presentation). Students than have to be more critical about what information they will talk about while creating a more analytical thought process. This will enhance their ability to better critical thinking.
Second, the activity plan was described in detail so that a substitute teacher would be able to copy the case study. He/she gave the exact steps of how to fullfill the assignment.
Third, the relavtive advantage of this project is that students will be able to carefully select specific information which is comes from a good source from the web. Also, they will be able to use a video recorder and iMovie to create a presentation.
The content will be thought by presenting the different videos to their peers. Others will watch and observe them and their project. Afterwards evaluate the individual projects and give feedback. Often students will be more decisive in their behavior and try to achieve at a high level when knowing peers will watch them later on. This will lead to a deeper understanding of the material.
This case study is a good example I believe of how technology can give opportunities to students to interact with ideas and content. By creating their own video the individual can be creative and choose the way of how they want to present the information. Furthermore, they will use skills that they can use in various other classes as well as in the real world.
